While I suspect _Silence_ is not quite written for me, your beautiful essay has tempted me to give it a look as well. Was this the same book made into a film a few years ago?

Hi Jacquie, very kind. Yes, Mr Scorsese is equally taken with the novel and was slightly better placed to make the movie (2016). Historical novels are not within my standard purview but, as you infer, this one was on home ground. Religious preoccupations aside, though, there’s a richly layered humanity and delicate pathos in the story to move any reader. Hope to unpack some of this in the next reflection.

Do I need more books on my TBR list? It seems I do . . . doh. I look forward to your next essay, as always.

Oh my goodness. So far this year, this is the best essay I’ve come across. I read along with the recording. Utterly breathtaking. The first thing I did when it concluded was place an order for “Silence”.

Thanks so much, Daniel. I’m trying to avoid too much plot spoiling but fear I may do so with wild abandon in part two!
